GhostBSD 4.0 BETA 1 now available

After a long awaited time, the first BETA build of the 4.0-RELEASE release cycle is available on SourceForge for the amd64 and i386 architectures.

Where to download:

The image checksums, ISO images and USB images are available here:
http://www.ghostbsd.org/download-4.0

Changes and problems fixed between 4.0-ALPHA3 and 4.0-BETA1 include:

  • Switch from cpio to rsync for copying file on the installation.
  • The kernel is now writable on the live DVD which solves graphic card kernel loading for Intel and ATI.
  • Updated FreeBSD 10.0-RELEASE to FreeBSD 10.0-RELEASE-p3.

Known issues:

  • Network with "Live Image" does not work in Virtualbox or VMware Workstation / Player - workaround is to install the OS.
  • GBI allow users to summit partition without root(/) partition.

Issues fixed that need testing:

  • Installer failed to copy files on virtual machine.
  • Xorg failed to load MATE.

A special thanks to those who had reported any issues.

I liked BSD computers but it lacks many options. For example, creating a DSL connection in BSD for a beginner like me is headache. I was unable to create it last time so I came back to Linux. I would love if such common options are made available in BSDs so I can come back and enjoy it.

feedback : ghostbsd 3.5, amd64 live (openbox) works so far FreeBSD livecd 9.2-RELEASE FreeBSD 9.2-RELEASE #0 agp0: <Intel GM965 SVGA controller> drm0: <Intel i965GM> however 4.0 BETA 1, amd64 live does not boot into Xorg .. fallback into cli and cannot manually startx in both root or ghostbsd accounts. In dmesg there are no 'clear issues' to the why it fails to start the xserver. Quit further testing for the moment. Keep up the good work, however I would prefer you'd stick to openbox or try cwm :)
